Fede Alvarez’s EVIL DEAD and the Horrors of Addiction

Alvarez stayed extremely true to the spirit of the original Evil Dead, creating an intensely visceral experience that was utterly horrifying to behold. But he also included a bold innovation, one that served as both a plot motivator and a brilliant metaphor for a modern social scourge. If the title of this article didn’t already give it away, I’m talking about addiction.

Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez talks 'possibility' of sequel

Director Fede Alvarez last week agreed on Twitter to make a sequel to his 2013 Evil Dead reboot if Uruguay wins the soccer World Cup — something which remains a distinct possibility. How serious is the filmmaker about returning to the Deadites-filled universe originally established in Sam Raimi’s Bruce Campbell-starring original 1981 movie? Maybe more seriously than you think.

When EW recently spoke with Alvarez about his upcoming Lisbeth Salander thriller The Girl In the Spider’s Web (out Nov. 9), we asked the director about the chances of him making a second Evil Dead film.

“Look, I love those movies,” he says. “Making my Evil Dead was an amazing experience, it was my first film. So, going back at some point will be a possibility. I mean, I’m really good friends with all those guys, with Bruce, and Sam, and Rob (Tapert, who has produced all the Evil Dead movies). So, we always chat about it. The good news — and I think that’s what sometimes people don’t understand — is, none of those guys will make any of these movies just because they can, just because it’s good business. They will only make it if they believe they have some good story to tell. A lot of people say that in this industry, but most of the time it’s not true. With those guys, all of us involved in those movies, we will just make them if we believe there’s a story that has to be told, and is awesome, and is great, and we believe that it will be better than anything that will be done before in that world. [When] we find that story, when we all agree on what it is, it will probably happen.”

A Hand, Broken Dishes, and a Chainsaw in Evil Dead II

The film is an amalgam of ideas, of dissonant elements that may not seem as though they would work on their own, but when combined, create something bizarre and effective – difficult to define, but powerful all the same. Unlike anything I ever have or likely ever will encounter again.

Ryan Reynolds to Star in Sam Raimi's Bermuda Triangle Film

Ryan Reynolds is reportedly set to star in a new film about the infamous Bermuda Triangle, which will apparently see the Deadpool 2 actor share the screen with sharks, Vikings, and Nazis. The sci-fi adventure movie is a project that was linked to Sam Raimi over a year ago, but according to sources the director is now moving forward with the production, which is said to begin shooting later this year.

The development of the as-yet-untitled film was first announced in February 2017, with Raimi reported to be in talks with Skydance Productions about directing the movie. There was no official announcement regarding progress at the time, and many assumed that the film was halted in development. Raimi has since been busy in the past year as a producer, working on the likes of Ash vs. Evil Dead, the reboot of The Grudge, and the upcoming Crawl. His last full-length theatrical release as director was Oz the Great and Powerful in 2013. More recently however, he was announced as the director of the first entry in a new series of movies based on The Kingkiller Chronicle.

[Trailer] Lisbeth Salander is Back in ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Director Fede Alvarez’s ‘Girl in the Spider’s Web’

Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, will return to the screen in Sony’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a first-time adaptation of the recent global bestseller.

For this latest chapter in the series, Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez has hit the reboot button, casting Claire Foy as our new Salander.

Ahead of the November release, the trailer has arrived, and it suggests two things: Foy was damn good casting for this, and Alvarez was an inspired choice for director.

'The Evil Dead' Soundtrack Gets Reimagined for New Vinyl Release

The score to the Sam Raimi horror classic will soon arrive on Kandarian Demon vinyl with a 'Necromonicon' booklet

The Evil Dead stands as one of horror's most iconic films, so it makes sense that its equally iconic score would be dusted off for a 2018 release.

Mondo/Death Waltz have announced they have teamed up with the film's original soundtrack composer Joe LoDuca to present The Evil Dead - A Nightmare Reimagined.

As you could perhaps guess from that title, the reissue is not a straight-up repressing of the original soundtrack for Sam Raimi's 1981 horror classic, but rather a fully re-recorded and expanded version by LoDuca of his original film score (which actually first arrived in 1984).

In a press release, Mondo explained, "Joe LoDuca went back to the drawing board to fully re-record and expand his original score to The Evil Dead with absolutely terrifying results. The record you hold in your hands manages to keep the essence and familiarity of the original score yet feels completely new and exciting due to the addition of all new music combining the classic and the contemporary."

Up above you check out the newly done artwork by Graham Humphreys, while below you can see the vinyl of the 2-LP set, which comes on Kandarian Demon vinyl (a.k.a. green, yellow and purple swirl with red splatter). The release also comes with a Necromonicon booklet featuring liner notes from LoDuca, Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert. It includes download card as well.

The Evil Dead - A Nightmare Reimagined goes on sale Wednesday (June 6).
