RIP: Ian Abercrombie Dies at 77

Ian Abercrombie, a busy character actor who gained recognition as Elaine Benes’ (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) eccentric boss Mr. Pitt on NBC’s Seinfeld, died Thursday in Hollywood. He was 77.
Abercrombie seemed to be always working, appearing in scores of films, TV shows and theater productions during his 50-year-plus career in show business. The British actor made his American stage debut in 1955 in a production of Stalag 17 opposite Jason Robards, played the Wise Man in Sam Raimi’s comedy-horror film Army of Darkness (1992) and was 800-year-old wizard Professor Crumbs on Disney Channel hit Wizards of Waverly Place.

Lily Collins Drops Out of THE EVIL DEAD Remake

Fede Alvarez‘ remake of Sam Raimi‘s The Evil Dead has lost its star. While things looked to be moving quickly, Variety’s Jeff Sneider now reports that Lily Collins has had to withdraw from the project due to scheduling issues. The only other project on her slate (that we know of) is the adaptation of The Mortal Instruments, so it’s possible that the shooting schedule for that film is the culprit. Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell are all producing the update based on Raimi’s 1981 horror film, and they hand-selected Alvarez to direct. Plot details are still scarce at this point, but Diablo Cody (who did some rewrite work on the script) described the project as “unbelievably violent.”

The lead in the remake will undoubtedly be a coveted role, so it’ll be interesting to see who steps in to replace Collins. The Abduction actress will next be seen in Tarsem Singh’s Snow White pic Mirror Mirror. The Evil Dead is slated for April 12th, 2013.

No, there's no character Ash. None of the original characters are in it. The original Evil Dead was about five kids who come across an evil, scary book and this is just going to be an updated version of that. This is a whole new story and Sam Raimi [original director], myself and Rob Tapert [original producer] are very involved in it so we're not really playing into any of the worries or anger that the Evil Dead fans have. We appreciate how they think the franchise is but, y'know, it's not their franchise. This is our movie, so we care whether it comes out good or not. And we just hope that, at the end of the day, people will say that it freaked them out as a horror movie.

Evil Dead News Exclusive: Interview with Elliott Serrano, Army of Darkness comic writer

Elliott Serrano is currently a writer on the "Army of Darkness" monthly comic-book licensed by Dynamite Entertainment. Serrano wrote the four-part "Army of Darkness: Ash Saves Obama" mini-series, as well as the new, ongoing Army of Darkness comic book series. The new series returns on February 22, 2012. Have you always wanted to be a writer? Did you dream of writing comics as a child?

I’ve always enjoyed reading comics and telling stories as a kid. I even created my own comic books when I was very young. I remember drawing mini-comics on folded half-sheets of ruled notebook paper, drawing each one and then filling in the word balloons after. I actually sold the comics to friends at my church, and since I didn’t have access to a copy machine, if I wanted to sell multiple copies of the same issue, I had to re-draw each issue. I was a big “Star Wars” and “Battlestar Galactica” fan growing up, so I created these short, ten-page stories where the characters of “Star Wars” and BSG would meet. I just loved drawing the space ships and imagined an X-Wing fighter in a dogfight with a Colonial Viper. Ah yes, there’s no way Universal and Lucasfilm would ever let that happen today. Anyway, even though I’ve always read comics, it wasn’t until I got to high school that I realized that you could actually create comics as profession. I mean, I knew somebody had to do it, but me? I decided then that I would be a comic book artist and went to art school. I soon realized that I lacked the psychological tenacity that you need to have to be a professional artist. I had a hard time focusing at the drawing table and just got frustrated too easily trying to get that image out of my head onto the page. At that point I decided to focus on writing, since you do have to have a visual sense to be able to write comics effectively. There’s a saying that movie directors are frustrated actors, well comic book writers are frustrated artists. Haha!

How did you get the gig writing for the ongoing Army of Darkness comic book series from Dynamite?

It really was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. I had become friends with Brandon Jerwa, writer of the” Battlestar Galactica” book for Dynamite as well as “G.I. Joe” for Devil’s Due Publishing. We were at the San Diego Comic Con a couple years ago, and during one of those late-night ‘after con drinking parties’ we discussed the books we’d love to write sometime. He would mention one after another, and I go ‘nah, not interested.‘ I then mentioned to him that I would love to write “Army of Darkness” if it ever became available. I knew that Dynamite had the license, but they already had a pretty rocking creative team working on it. For me it was just wishful thinking at the time. Flash forward almost a year and Brandon calls me to ask if I’d be interested in co-writing the sequel to “Xena/Army of Darkness” with him. The first mini-series did surprisingly well, so Dynamite asked Brandon to write a follow-up. He was a real Xena fan, but felt he could use help writing Ash. Knowing my love of the character, he asked to bring me on board. We tag-teamed on it and Joe Rybandt, editor at Dynamite, was impressed enough that he offered me a chance to write an AoD one-shot. I wrote a stand-alone story for issue #18 called “Montezuma’s Revenge” where Ash travels to Mexico to fight the resurrected King Montezuma. After that, Joe asked if I’d be interested in writing the “Ash Saves Obama” mini-series. I guess that Dynamite was pleased enough with what I did on that mini to offer me the new monthly.

Oh, and here’s a little bit of trivia for you: I originally proposed that we call the Xena/AoD mini-series “Xena/Army of Darkness 2: What Again? Cuz’ we all know sequels suck.” I thought we should just have fun with the idea that sequels rarely live up to the original. They ended up just using the “what again?” tag-line.

Because of your Geek To Me blog, I know you enjoy all things geek. How long have you been a fan of the Evil Dead movies or Ash the character?

It’s funny, but I became a fan of the “Evil Dead” movies in reverse order. The first film in the series I saw was “Army of Darkness“, which I went to see in the theater. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected I would. See, I’m not the biggest fan of horror that’s all gore and bloody dismembering for the sole purpose of shocking you. I had no idea that Sam Raimi had such a sensibility to put humor in to help offset the horror. Mind you, “Army of Darkness” is probably the most tame of the “Evil Dead” movies when it comes to horror. I really consider AoD to be more of an adventure film with horror undertones. And being a big fan of the Sinbad movies, I just loved the homage to Ray Harryhausen when Ash fought the skeleton army. I then watched “Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn“, which is way creepier than AoD. And then I finally saw the first “Evil Dead“. I couldn’t watch that movie more than once, it creeped me out so bad.

As for Ash, I really do love his character. He is that hero that I wish you could find in all horror films. He’s resilient, determined and almost fearless. Almost. I mean, jeez, he fights the forces of darkness! Then again, he is a bit of a dolt. And I was especially taken by him when I realized that he’s a bit of a geek himself. Remember that scene in AoD where he’s pulling the chemistry books out of the trunk of his car? He also had copies of “Dark Horse Presents”, a comic book, along with issues of “Fangoria.” From that you could infer that he was a bit of a fanboy, and definitely a chemistry nerd. I explored the idea that he’s kind of a closeted comic-book geek in the “Ash Saves Obama” mini-series.

The original title for the Army of Darkness comic you wrote, featuring the president, was "Hail To the Chief, Baby". Why the heck did Dynamite go with "Ash Saves Obama" for a title?

Haha! Everybody asks me that when I tell them what the original title was supposed to be. Everyone tells me “why did they change it? Your title is way better!” I’ll even write “Hail to the Chief, Baby” on the cover when I sign the book.

The truth is that the publisher believed that “Ash Saves Obama” was a better title to market the book under than “Hail to the Chief, Baby.”. Remember, this was when everybody was putting Obama in their comics in the hopes of boosting sales. Marvel Comics already made some crazy sales numbers with their Spider-Man issue which had Obama appearing in it. So Dynamite wanted to try and capture some of that same “lightning in a bottle.” They even got the artist of that Spider-Man story, Todd Nauck, to do the covers for the four issues. Unfortunately, we got to work on the mini-series near the tail end of the “Obama craze.” It was fortunate for me, though, since it was positioned where I could see the mistakes others had made and was able to avoid them. While “Ash Saves Obama” first appears to be a marketing stunt - which I’ll admit it initially was - I was able to poke fun at the idea that everybody was trying to cash in on the “Obama craze” at the time.

I still maintain that my title was better though, but don’t tell Nick I said that. Haha!

Why did you guys bring President Obama into the Army of Darkness series, instead of some other generic presidential figure?

Again, that was a marketing decision. If you read the story, though, you’ll see that while I make subtle references to some of President Obama’s traits, I tried to make it that it could be almost any president in the story. Also, when you put in too many references to the politics of the time, your book can get really dated really fast. I even asked the artist to refrain from actually showing Obama until near the end of the mini-series. I said “I want this to be like Obama is the shark from JAWS.” When we finally see him at the end, it’s like a big reveal, where we’re saying “yes, we weren’t joking, it really is Obama.” That was also my homage to the comic books of my youth where if the President was in the story, you never showed his face.

It’s funny, speaking again about the title, I once read a review where the reader said they were mad that Ash and Obama don’t actually meet in the story. I mean, they do “team up” but they don’t really meet if that makes any sense. And technically, Ash doesn’t really save him. In the end, though, I wrote the book to stand alone as a fun “Army of Darkness” story, regardless of who the president was.

You placed yourself into the Ash Saves Obama comics. Was this a way to preserve Elliot Serrano for all time?

Haha! No, that was suggested by my editor, Joe Rybandt. I had put a joke in where we were going to have all these comic creators getting turned into Deadites at a comic convention. I submitted the script and the licensor said that we couldn’t use the likenesses of those people without their written consent. Mind you, I only included creators who I knew and were currently working for Dynamite, but whatever. Anyway, Joe says “you can’t use those guys so why not go meta and include yourself?” If you read how the scene plays out, it pretty much tells you how I felt when they first asked me to write a comic book with President Obama in it! Plus, it has Brandon strangling me which he swears is the way I’m going to die one day.

Since the Army of Darkness comics with Dynamite are sub-licensed, Bruce Campbell doesn't get paid a nickel. He actually refuses to sign the Dynamite comics. I know you have met and interviewed Bruce Campbell and admire him. How do you reconcile being a writer of these comics with being a big fan of someone who created the persona you are continuing to develop?

That is, quite honestly, really tough for me. As you’ve said, I’ve met him and interviewed him. Heck, I’ve met him more than once and if you watch the video of our talk at the “Burn Notice” panel at San Diego Comic Con, you’ll notice that he looks at me with a ’where do I know this guy from?’ expression on his face. Getting to interview him was a real thrill for me when you consider that years ago, when he was out promoting his show “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.”, he came to Chicago to appear at a rodeo and I went to the rodeo to try and meet him. Just so you know…I HATE RODEOS! I really, REALLY HATE THEM. And yet, I was willing to give the rodeo promoter my money for a chance to meet an idol. So, believe me that I took it pretty seriously when I heard that Bruce Campbell was refusing to sign the books.

Now, I’ve asked my publisher if there was any way we could reach out to Mr. Campbell and offer an olive branch. From what I understand, they have tried to initiate contact and make amends but he just isn’t interested. That’s fair. He’s a busy guy and it’s not up to him to help promote our book. And I really don’t want to get into the whole issue of licensing and who gets paid what. I mean, do the primaries from Star Wars get royalties from all the comic books their characters appear in? I don’t know. So, yeah, that’s kind of a sticky wicket.

As for me, I do know that I’ve supported Bruce Campbell as much as a fan can. I’ve bought his books - “If Chins Could Kill“ and “Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way“ - which are damn funny by the way, and I own each of the shows he’s starred in on DVD. I bought “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.” on VHS - which meant subscribing to a special video club through TIME/LIFE - and yet again when the complete series was released on DVD. I own most all his movies; “Bubba Ho Tep” is probably his best “character” film, and “My Name Is Bruce” fits the bill perfectly if you’re still craving an unofficial sequel to the “Evil Dead” films. And I watch “Burn Notice” religiously. So I think I’ve done my part to support Mr. Campbell and put a few bucks in his pocket.

But in spite of all that, I’m gonna make Mr. Campbell this offer…

If it means that he will finally sign one of Dynamite Comics’ “Army of Darkness” books when a fan puts it in front of him, I will give him every cent I’ve made so far writing the new series. Seriously. That’s how much I appreciate what he’s done for me as a fan and how much it means to me for the book to have his blessing. Mind you, I'm not making Hollywood movie star money - I'm just a lowly comic-book writer - but I'm willing to sign over the checks I've gotten from working on AoD to Bruce if he wants them. But then he's gotta give the book his blessing.

And maybe agree to co-write an issue with me. Hehe.

Army of Darkness returns to comics with a new #1 on February 22, 2012. On the cover is a woman with Ashley J. Williams. From what I understand, her name is "Ash". What relation does she have to "The Chosen One" Ashley J. Williams?

The woman we see on the cover of AoD #1 - a mighty sexy cover by Tim Seeley if you ask me - is also named Ash. Actually, her name is Ashley, but all her friends call her Ash. Sound familiar? What I’m doing is playing with an idea that John Layman - kick ass writer of CHEW - introduced a while back in his “Marvel Zombies versus Army of Darkness” mini-series, namely that there is an “Ash” in every parallel universe.

The female Ash that we meet in issue #1 of the new series is from a parallel universe. But even more so, she is pretty much the opposite of what “our” Ash - the male one- is like. Where “our” Ash is a goofy-looking, doltish knucklehead who often uses brute force and dumb luck to conquer evil, the “alternate” Ashley is a sexy female who uses her smarts and quick wit to succeed. The first issue of the new series focuses on her origin and gives us some examples of how different she is from “our” Ash. Readers will quickly discover a MAJOR difference about her, and it’s something OTHER than being female.

Issue #1 also introduces another character who will figure into the story later on. I set up a lot of stuff in this first issue that will pay off down the road.

Oh, and if you read “Ash Saves Obama” as well as my one-shot “Montezuma’s Revenge”, I dropped clues of what’s to come in the new series in those books too.

You currently have 4 stores lined up for the "Army of Darkness: Kick Ash Comic Shop Tour" in Febuary 2012. At which stores will you be appearing?

The shops I’ll be appearing at so far are: Challengers Comics + Conversation, G-Mart Comics, Scatterbrained Art Gallery, and a couple others that are yet to be announced. The point behind all this is that I want to raise awareness about the “Army of Darkness” title. I talk to so many fans of the “Evil Dead” movies who tell me “I love the movies but I had no idea there was a comic book!” With the comics market struggling like it is, every sale helps keep a title going. And I know that AoD fans are some of the most dedicated fans out there, so I could really use their support.

To that end, I want the “Kick Ash Comic Shop Tour” to be more than just a comic book signing. I want folks to show up in their fave outfits and costumes. Want to show up looking like a Deadite? Sure! We’d love to have you! And wait till you see what the guys at Challengers have planned for the event. I’m not gonna spill the beans just yet, but I’ll just say that Challengers is gonna be the place you’ll wanna visit if you’d like to “shop smart.“

So I’m putting the word out to the comic shop owners that are reading this: if you want me to bring the “Kick Ash Comic Shop Tour” to your shop, just drop me a line at RedEyeGeek@gmail.com and we’ll talk. Mind you, I can only visit shops in the Chicago area right now, but I’m not against venturing further away from my home town if the right situation presents itself. The “Kick Ash” tour is going to be a celebration of the wonderful world that Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi created for us.

Outside of the Army of Darkness comic world, what does Elliot Serrano have planned for the future?

Well, to be honest, I have at least a year’s worth of issues planned out, and should the sales of the book hold up, I’d like to tell the whole story. So a lot of my energy is going to be dedicated to the AoD universe, writing the book and promoting it.

Beyond that, I still have the Geek To Me column and blog keeping me busy. I’ve been co-writing a column for BleedingCool.com which has been a real blast to work on. I’m also looking to produce a new series of videos that have to do with professional wrestling. And I have a couple ideas that are waiting for their turn to see the light of day. One of which is so HUGE that I dare not speak of it for fear of jinxing it.

I mean, it’s pretty friggin’ big and if I get to do it, I just may be able to die happy once I’m done.

Well, first I’d need to get Ash through all the crap he’s gonna get into over the next few months or so. Pity the poor fellow. He’s gonna have a really rough year.

Dynamite Entertainment's "Army of Darkness" is Going Serial! A Comic Book Preview

Thinking about next year already? Dynamite Entertainment's success with its Army of Darkness (AoD) license is going to get a regular series starting February 2012. This series will come out after "Danger Girl and the Army of Darkness" graphic novel releases mid January.

Writer Elliott Serrano (from the previous AoD releases) and artist Marat Mychaels ("Youngblood" and "Demonslayer") will provide an ongoing saga that promises to be a new chapter. As the evil of the Necronomicon spreads across the cosmos, a new ally in the war against the Deadites emerges. There is a woman going by the name of "Ash," and readers may very well ask what her relation is with the real "Chosen One?" Is Ashley J. Williams going to have competition? They will be answered in due time, as our accidental hero travels deep into a pyramid of Ancient Egypt in a parallel dimension in the first tale.

Serrano, in a public statement, says that he wants to take the world of Evil Dead into new directions. "We're going to meet new characters, face bigger baddies and explore what it truly means to be the ‘Chosen One.’ Starting with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, so many talented people have contributed to the mythos—not only in the movies but also in comics and video games—and living up to their efforts has been a real challenge. But I'm also drawing inspiration from those creators who've gone before me. As a HUGE AoD fan myself, I'm trying to tell a story that I would love to read!"

The Evil Dead is Coming in 2013

Sony has locked down a release date for The Evil Dead remake, directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert.
Given the recent news shooting will not begin until March, it looks like you'll have a full year or so to gripe more about the fact it is getting made.

The studio - which partnered with Film District to release the remake - announced The Evil Dead is going to strike on April 12, 2013. That is somewhat at the cusp of the summer movie season these days. I wonder if Sony will be keeping a close eye on how The Cabin in the Woods performs in April 2012 and take a few notes from that release.

Fede Alvarez reboot heads to New Zealand.

It sounds like the upcoming remake of The Evil Dead will be shipping off to New Zealand for lensing in March. Director Fede Alvarez will be shooting from his own screenplay, which was revised by Oscar winner Diablo Cody. And as we learned a couple months ago, the production centers around five friends who find themselves stranded in a cabin where they uncover a Book of the Dead, not unlike in Sam Raimi's 1981 original.

However, Bloody Disgusting reveals that there will be a drug subplot involved wherein the lead character takes his sister to the cabin to kick her substance addiction. Without her drugs, she becomes restless and ornery, making it difficult to tell whether she is going insane or is possessed by demons.

Ghost House/Mandate Pictures and Sony/FilmDistrict are still in the process of casting the friends David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia. David is engaged to Natalie, Mia is the friend who plans to detox at the cabin, Olivia is her best friend/nurse, and Eric is presumably the one to unleash the demons from the Necronomicon.

Ghost House boards remake of horror film

The Sam Raimi-Rob Tapert remake of "Evil Dead" is moving forward with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and FilmDistrict partnering with Ghost House Pictures, and Sony Pictures to distribute worldwide excluding the U.K. and France.

Raimi and Tapert announced the remake in July, tapping Fede Alvarez to write and direct Ghost House's remake of their seminal 1981 cult horror film "The Evil Dead."

SPWA president Steven Bersch and FilmDistrict CEO Peter Schlessel made the distribution announcement Wednesday and said the remake is on track for a production start next year. Lia Buman, FilmDistrict's exec VP of acquisitions, will oversee the project; Nicole Brown and J.R. Young will oversee for Ghost House.

Original producing partners Tapert, Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the original franchise) and Sam Raimi will produce, with Ghost House partners Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane exec producing.

"For 30 years, Sam, Bruce and I have been looking for the right home where we could return the deadites to the bigscreen," Tapert said in a statement. "Amy Pascal and Jeff Blake at Sony and Peter Schlessel at FilmDistrict have always been incredible partners who share our passion for great storytelling as well as our obsession for scaring the pants off the audience. Together, we are looking forward to terrorizing a whole new generation."

Alvarez wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues, and "Juno" writer Diablo Cody did revisions on the draft. Story centers on five friends holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead; a demonic force is unleashed, possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival.

The franchise had ended with 1992's "Army of Darkness."

Evil Dead News Visits The Evil Dead Filming Location in Morristown, Tennessee

On November 18, 2011, some friends and I went to the actual filming location of The Evil Dead in Morristown, Tennessee. I got directions to this location online and found them to be quite accurate. Right before we got to what remains of the Evil Dead cabin, we were stopped by a funeral procession - a little spooky, to say the least. While in Morristown, we ate at the Little Dutch Restaurant. We were greeted by a woman named Tommy, who said she knew a few locals who Fake Shemped in The Evil Dead. I left my email and phone number with Tommy and hope to hear from some of these people soon.

Cheryl Guttridge starred in Sam Raimi's first short horror film Clockwork. She was a Fake Shemp in The Evil Dead and played Sally in Josh Becker's film Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except. She is now an author and has published 8 books under the name Margaret Allison and 2 books under her married name, Cheryl Klam. This exclusive interview was conducted via email the last week of October, 2011.

How did your acting career begin?

I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz in third grade. After that, I quickly became known as the school's official theater geek. There was no turning back.

Can you explain how you first met Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Scott Speigel and the rest of the gang?

The summer before I started high school, I was in a community theatre group that did the play "The Man Who Came to Dinner." I already knew Scott, who, like me, had been involved with this group for awhile. That year, the director was a college student Scott knew from high school (John Cameron) who had cast another guy who was home from college for the summer, Bruce Campbell, as the lead (Sheridan Whiteside, of course!) I was cast as June - (the ingenue). Sam was friends with Bruce, John and Scott and would stop by the theater occasionally to say hello. Actually--John might have convinced him to be part of the cast at some point - maybe that's why Sam was there. But that's how I got to know them all. We began to hang out after play practice and on the weekends we would go see movies and analyze them. I actually remember going to the drive-in with Sam, his date, Bruce...and me. Bruce and I were sitting in the back seat (of the famed Oldsmobile) at a drive-in filled with lovey-dovey couples on a Saturday night--which was slightly uncomfortable since not only were Bruce and I not dating - I was so intimidated by him that I barely spoke to him EVER. And he had no interest in me, whatsoever. Fortunately, that back seat was so big we didn't have to communicate or come within ten feet of each other the entire evening. It was like a scene from a sitcom.

Your best friend dated Sam Raimi, and you used to "tag along" on dates with the two of them. Did you ever think, as a passenger in that 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88, the car would become so iconic?

That's funny. No, I never did. But I must say, that middle back seat was very comfortable, especially when leaning into the front seat saying, "Hey guys, are we there yet? How 'bout now?"

You played the lead in Sam Raimi's first horror short Clockwork. The scene with the homeless man attacking you (played by Scott Spiegel) is quite violent. There is also a nice, effective twist ending. What do you remember of that shoot?

I remember that shoot very well. That was John Cameron's arm that grabbed me through the door. I remember Sam giving me notes on what he wanted me to do - I remember screaming at the top of my lungs and having a sore throat afterwards. I remember thinking "Dang--I am a really GREAT actress." I actually hadn't seen it until recently and when I showed it to my friend, she immediately started mocking my performance. I was shocked! And all this time I had thought I was so good. The screaming, the clutching, the falling....

In any case, those shoots were a lot of fun. It was always the same gang doing everything.

You "fake shemped" Linda's leg for the spider-web infection stop motion scene in The Evil Dead. Having to lay still for so long to shoot that scene caused you to become nauseous. You also subjected yourself to being covered with peat moss in Sam Raimi's garage, in 120 degree temperatures, again fake-shemping for Linda's character. It seems almost everyone physically suffered in some way to make The Evil Dead. How do you feel about those experiences, 30 years later?

I'm very glad I did it, needless to say. And even though I didn't exactly have a glamour bit, I really enjoyed hanging out with the guys and being part of the process.

That sounds very smart and perceptive. doesn't it? "a part of the process..." The truth of the matter was, I was in high school - getting paid to hang out with my friends! What could be better than that? Also, everyone was doing everything, so it didn't seem so odd that we were being asked to cover ourselves in peat moss in a garage that was hotter than any sauna. I recently found the notes from an "article" I wrote on Rob and the making of Evil Dead - it was written the month before the Evil Dead was released in the US. (It was never published - I wrote it for a college project.) In the interview, Rob talks about how, during the Evil Dead shoot, he was buried underneath an actress so that he could push her up out of the ground. Not a typical producer responsibility.

From reading different articles on the Internet, you obviously have had many interests other than acting. You majored in Political Science & Communication at Michigan University, and later pursued a career in writing. How did you decide on writing as a career, rather than politics or acting?

I liked acting - but I just felt more comfortable writing. I don't know that I was ever that interested in politics--but Michigan didn't have an undergraduate journalism degree (at that point I wanted to be a journalist) so I kind of figured Communication + Political Science = Journalism. I wanted to make sure that when I was hired for my anchor job at Sixty Minutes I'd be taken seriously. And when it became clear that I couldn't just make stuff up as a journalist, nor did it look like I'd ever get hired as one, I switched to fiction.

You wrote several romance novels under the pseudonym Margaret Allison. Now you write more teen oriented books under your married name, Cheryl Klam. How did you progress from romance novels to the current teen genre? Why did you choose to write under your married name and move away from the pseudonym?

My pseudonym was the idea of my editor at the time. She didn't really like either Guttridge or Klam as a last name. And switching to Young Adult was my agent's idea - and she wanted me to use my real name, as well. It seemed to make sense since it was a completely different genre.

Just to set the record straight, in "The Evil Dead Companion", it states that you wrote under the name of Margery Allingham. Your only pseudonym has been Margaret Allison, correct?

Really? I wonder where they got that name from. I actually like that name better! But no, Margaret Allison is the name I wrote under. It was my grandmother's name.

You have written a feature film that has been optioned and also a TV script. Were these projects made into movies or TV shows?

No. They're still floating around optionland.

Your current project is called ELUSION and is co-authored with Claudia Gabel. What is this book about?

It's an "Inception"-type futuristic thriller series about three teenagers attempting to solve a mystery with serious personal stakes--they're led inside an alternate reality game that transports them to a dangerously seductive Utopian world. It's very different from anything either Claudia or I have ever done before - we're both very excited about it.

Tim Quill, the Blacksmith from Army of Darkness, mentioned in a 2010 interview he was writing a script for a movie about Fake Shemps called The Shemps. Have you heard anything about this, and would this be something you would want to be a part of?

I had the pleasure of getting to know Tim when we were in Josh Becker's film Thou Shalt Not Kill. Congrats to him! The Shemps project sounds like a great idea, but I don't know anything about it. I don't live in LA or MI so I'm a little out of the loop. The filmmaker Ryan Meade was working on a project this summer about Tom Sullivan (the make up artist for the Evil Dead) and we tried to figure out a way for me to participate - but with my work schedule and the distance, it's tough.

Will you be "Fake Shemping" or have another role in Sam Raimi's upcoming Oz prequel?

Sadly, no. My chances of having a tall decaf skim latte with James Franco are slim to none.

How do you feel about The Evil Dead being remade?

I'm excited. I know that these guys waited a long time to do this because they wanted to make sure it was done right. I think it's going to be great.

Lastly, do you think you will ever write a book about the Super-8 days and your experiences with the Evil Dead gang?

I'm not sure there's a book there (at least a book solely from my perspective). But I have always thought it interesting that this whole group of guys from Detroit went from making low budget movies to being so successful in Hollywood. A lot of talented filmmakers came out of that gang: Sam, Bruce and Rob - but also Scott Spiegel, Josh Becker, John Cameron, Bill Prady and David Goodman....and even Joel and Ethan Coen were friends of theirs from way back (I think Ethan was as a film editor on the Evil Dead). In fact, I rode in the limo to the Detroit Evil Dead premiere with Sam, Rob--and Ethan Coen. Pretty funny. (Besides the limo, we also had the "rotating" spotlights and red carpet. It was all very 1980s Detroit-Hollywood.)

Negative Nancy Productions and Campus Pointe Mall are pleased to announce the annual “KALAMAZOO HORROR FEST” film festival. The event will take place October 21-23 in the Video Hits building at the northwest corner of Michigan and Howard.

Bringing together horror buffs and local filmmakers alike, the festival will feature screenings of the cult classics, “EVIL DEAD”, “SLEEPAWAY CAMP”, and “I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE” throughout the weekend.

Special guest panelists at Horror Fest include but are not limited to: Danny Hicks (Evil Dead 2), Beverly Randolph, John Philbin and Allan Troutman (Return of the Living Dead), Timothy Quill (Army of Darkness) Camille Keaton (I Spit On Your Grave) and Kalamazoo native Michael Perez (Sinners and Saints). Q & A sessions and meet and greets are also interspersed throughout the weekend.

ShEvil Dead is an outrageous parody of both Evil Dead movies, as well as Army of Darkness, but featuring an all female cast. Get ready for hot chicks, demons from hell, flying body parts and blood spraying all over the audience. Some items to note:

Unlike other theater companies with blood shows, we do not charge extra for sitting in a blood section. Everyone will be covered in blood... although there will be a small Dry Seats Section.
For large groups, it's recommended to come early.
If you want to get drenched in blood, come early so you can sit in the Prime Blood Seats.
On October 29th we'll have a Halloween Costume Contest with prizes!

"I wanted to do a horror anthology show," says Ted Raimi about Morbid Minutes, "but one that was less [focused] on blood n' guts and more in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock Presents or The Twilight Zone. I felt like the gore stuff was getting out of control, and I wanted to bring it back to classic storytelling techniques... It's a return to a more traditional short-form horror story. You will not find any monsters -- no vampires or zombies or werewolves. That stuff I find to be more fun. With Morbid Minutes, I'm trying as hard as I can to create a show that will touch at more of the base horror in all of our lives. Things like, 'You had a lot of money, now you have to live on the street.' Things like that that are purposefully shocking to many of us, things that we don't want to think about."

Metro Detroit export Sam Raimi inhabits a rarefied place in Hollywood.

He's right up there with the Peter Jacksons and Christopher Nolans of that world -- the cinematic maestros who have access to the best actors, crew and visual effects for their box-office blockbusters.

"Sam Raimi is at the top of the top of whatever mountain is tallest," says Steven Gaydos, executive editor of the entertainment industry must-read Variety. "How many directors are in this club of making movies that are monumentally successful, generate billions of dollars, are iconic?"

Raimi burst onto the scene with the 1981 cult classic "The Evil Dead" and moved up to the cinematic stratosphere in the 2000s with the "Spider-Man" trilogy, which has earned about $2.5 billion worldwide.

Now he's at the helm of Disney's "Oz: The Great and Powerful," the mega-budget prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" that is filming at Pontiac's Raleigh Michigan Studios complex.

From there, it's a short drive to the suburbs where Raimi grew up making not-so-amateur movies. But it has been a long journey through buckets of fake blood and a grab bag of genres for Raimi, who has returned to metro Detroit with "Oz" as something of a hometown hero.

"He basically brought a sack of cash back into the Detroit area and dumped it in a big pile, God bless him," says actor Bruce Campbell, whose friendship with Raimi stretches to their teenage filmmaking days in the mid-1970s.

"Oz: The Great and Powerful" anticipates spending roughly $105 million in the state and is approved for nearly $40 million in film incentives. It's the biggest project to come to Michigan under the incentives. And with the incentive program dramatically reduced and redefined under the state's budget for 2012, it could be the last project of its size in Michigan for a while.

Back in January, Evil Dead News posted a trailer for a zombie horror comedy called "Deadheads". "Deadheads" is both written and directed by the Pierce Brothers, Brett Pierce and Drew Pierce. Their father is Bart Pierce, who did the Special Effects Photography on "The Evil Dead". We recently caught up with Brett Pierce for an exclusive interview. Here is what he had to say.

What is DEADHEADS about?

It's a buddy zombie comedy about two recently risen undead who embark on a road trip in search of a lost love. It's a mixed bag of comedy/action-adventure/horror. My favorite description from a friend was "It's the Ferris Bueller of zombie movies".

Where did the idea for DEADHEADS come from?

Drew and I have always been a fan of mixed genre films, especially horror/comedy. Drew was really set on a buddy zombie movie where the zombies were the main characters and I was really set on the idea of making a road trip movie because Drew and I love films like "Stand By Me" and "The Goonies". I loved Drew's idea so we jammed them together and ended up with a Zom Rom Com.

Zombie films seem to be really popular these days; what sets DEADHEADS apart from similar films?

We really put an emphasis on character in DEADHEADS. We wanted people to root for our zombie trio of Mike, Brent, and Cheese so we made a conscious effort to really make you care about these zombies. Drew and I see so many genre flicks that we should love just because it's our type of flick, like a zombie movie or superhero film, but most of the time they fall flat for us because we're not emotionally invested in the characters. That's what we love so that's where we put our efforts in the script.

Is this film solely for horror fans, or will it appeal to a larger audience?

It's for everybody. It's got some really fun silly horror bits that is inspired from our days of growing up amid the production of EVIL DEAD but it's as much a horror comedy as it is an adventure film. Audiences who have seen the film have noticed a lot of influences in the flick ranging from STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES all the way to a love for 80's cartoons like TRANSFORMERS. It's a crazy road trip movie with zombies looking for a girl so it's flavored for everybody.

What are some of your favorite zombie films?

I love both Dawn of the Dead's. Not sure if it gets any better than those two. Shaun of the Dead of course. Shaun was one of the most enjoyable times in a movie theater I've had in the last 10 years. That movie is gold.

How did you originally get interested in horror films and filmmaking?

Drew and I's father was the photographic FX artist on the original EVIL DEAD. When we were itty bitty our father invited the Evil Dead crew to take over our house for the summer to complete the FX work on the film. It was a mad house of severed limbs, cockroaches, and Karo syrup but we loved it. We saw Sam and all these young guys making movie magic and after that we never wanted to be anything other than filmmakers.

Who handled the special effects for the film?

Patrick Halpin of Dead Pretzel FX and Jason "Chappy" Chapman. These guys dealt with the daily nightmare of having to do three zombie leads every day as well as all the practical gore FX that we dropped on them. Sometimes we had 30 zombie extras as well as an impalement to do in the same day and they'd do it. I love Michigan-based crews because they always get it done. Those guys are wizards and they did an amazing job on the film.

Are there any memorable scenes that you hope will end up in the Director's cut, that you wish could have stayed in the current edit?

We really worked hard to get the movie to a cut that we loved so we're really happy with the way it stands. But that being said, we had so many amazing one-liners from Ben Webster, who plays our Michael Bay infused zombie hunter McDinkle, that it kills me that some of those gut bombs will probably never be seen. Some of them made it into the blooper reel over the end credits though.

You're using your Dad's sequence from Evil Dead in DEADHEADS during a drive-in movie scene. How did that come about?

We got really lucky. A family that owned this beautiful drive-in, the Capri, on the west side of Michigan was nice enough to let us shoot there. The original scene was not meant to take place at a drive-in, but I saw it while scouting for locations and knew we had to rewrite to make it work. Only problem now was, what's on the screen? It was a Hail Mary, but I called Sam Raimi's office from set and somehow got transferred to him. He answered the phone "Hey Bart!" thinking I was my father. I pleaded our case. I let him know much he and the EVIL DEAD crew were an inspiration for my brother and I and how important it was to have a part of our dad's work in the movie for us. Luckily, Sam is the coolest guy in the world and he made it happen. The nerd in us still can't believe we get to have it in there.

DEADHEADS recently won the Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking Award at The Newport Beach Film Festival. How does it feel to start winning awards for your hard efforts?

Amazing! We've been working on this film for years and we've taken our hits. We ran out of money, we were denied by fests, and we couldn't get a soul to watch it because it didn't star one of the TWILIGHT kids. We've screened now at some fests and the response is huge and that's so gratifying. We had three showings at the Newport Beach Film Fest because we kept selling out. As a filmmaker all you see is what you can do better next time but when audience members come and give you a hug and tell us how much they love the movie that all goes away.

You guys are currently doing the film festival circuit. At which
upcoming festivals will DEADHEADS be screened?

We're going to Fright Fest and screening at the Empire Cinema in London which is amazing! It seats over 1300 and it's our type of crowd. We're also in Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival at the end of the month for a nice home state of Michigan premiere. We're also in the Albuquerque Film Festival in August. More in the pipeline too. We're going to all of them!

We've got a fun Halloween movie we'd love to do about a guy who becomes the new Samhain, who, in our tale, is the spirit and protector of all Hallow's Eve (Halloween). It's Evil Dead 2 style fun with a lot of traditional Halloween myths worked in such as Samhain, Jack O'Lantern, the Headless Horseman and all the Halloween creepiness we can muster. We want to make the movie that everyone wants to watch leading up to the single best holiday ever.

Director Federico Alvarez has revealed a few small bits about his upcoming Evil Dead remake, though I think you could have guessed most of it for yourself.

Here are some quotes from El Pais as filtered through Google Translate. First, Alvarez speaks:

As fans of the original we know what we are going to offend those who are also fans and what we will not bother you, but we can not make a movie just for them… we have a pretty decent English but not to give realism to the dialogue, in our case [having Diablo Cody do a rewrite] was essential to that.

And now, from the text of their story:

The only recognizable face is part of Bruce Campbell, but will be in a cameo towards the end of the film. Another thing that will change the characters and some story details, while keeping the basic outline of friends who are beleaguered by demons in a cabin alone.

A Campbell cameo towards the end? Chief Deadite? Hitchhiker shot through the door? Police officer come to look at the mess and wear shades while talking about the stupid dead kids before an arm shoots up out of the ground and grabs him around the throat?

I’m thinking he’s going to be a deadite, at least. Or perhaps a better word would be “hoping.”

I was also trying to suggest they’re going to flip it and have the protagonist be a girl, even though that would bring the film rather more in line with typical horror movie convention…

Diablo Cody is rewriting the script for the "Evil Dead" remake being put together by Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert.

The writer, who won the Academy Award for "Juno," more recently wrote the 2009 horror-comedy "Jennifer's Body."

Raimi is back with his original "Evil Dead" producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell on the Ghost House Pictures project for Mandate. Campbell starred as "Ash" in "Evil Dead" and its two sequels.

The original "Evil Dead" is about five friends who unintentionally summon demons in the woods.

Bruce Campbell Confirms New Evil Dead Film - UPDATED

Alright, you primitive screwheads, listen up: a new Evil Dead movie is on the way.

Talk about a new Evil Dead film has been kicking around for awhile but as is usually the case with such fan-powered hopes and dreams, there's been no real substance to any of it. Until yesterday, that is, when DreadCentral.com claimed "on good authority from a very reliable source" that Bob Murawski, an editor whose partnership with director Sam Raimi goes back to the 1992 flick Army of Darkness, was in Detroit to start work on a fourth film. Evil Dead 4, according to the report, will be "a small indie thing like the first two."

That's good news, albeit still a rumor - but a rumor that got a big boost late last night by way of a tweet from none other than Bruce "Ash" Campbell, B-movie legend, best Elvis ever and of course the "hero," as far as that goes, of the Evil Dead franchise.

"Believe in the remake, dawg!" he wrote. "The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell."

I'm not sure if the Evil Dead films qualify as scary, but cool as hell? Definitely. And a chance to watch Campbell smash things over his own head again? Take my money, please.

UPDATE: In a follow-up tweet, Campbell clarified that the new Evil Dead film is in fact a remake of the original Evil Dead and not an all-new chapter. "Good people. My tweet was about remaking Evil Dead - not Evil Dead 4," he wrote. Campbell's role in the project is not yet known.

It also appears that while Sam Raimi will be involved, Fede Alvarez will actually be in the director's chair. According to Bloody Disgusting, Alvarez came to attention with the 2009 short film Ataque de pánico! [Panic Attack!]

Some very interesting news to report tonight. It all starts on Dread Central, where they report from a "very reliable source" that a new Evil Dead, a fourth movie which was been talked about plenty before, is in the works and that Sam Raimi's editor Bob Murawski is out in Detroit starting work. But then things get a little fuzzy because Raimi is actually casting his other movie Oz: The Great in Powerful in Detroit right now (via BD), however there's hope. A tweet from a new twitter account that might indeed be Bruce Campbell himself (@GroovyBruce) confirms the news.

It may actually mean there is something in the works. Read on!

He is an aging mummy-battling Elvis Presley in the horror-comedy "Bubba Ho-Tep." And among nearly 100 other characters, self-proclaimed B-movie actor Bruce Campbell is now retired Navy SEAL Sam Axe from USA Network's hit spy show, "Burn Notice."

Instead of gaining fame as a pretty marquee face in blockbuster movies, Campbell's notoriety is the result of years spent in the blue collar world of acting. Originally from the suburbs of Detroit, he is a work-for-hire performer who just happened to appear in enough movies and TV shows he got to be well known. Here is my art robot named "Evil Dead". This name comes from the movie trilogy which feature Ash, an S-mart clerk thrown through an assortment of crazy adventures. Really, if you have not seen these movies,
THEY ARE A MUST SEE!!!
The robot is made from regular Vex parts, some glued on prints, and is remote controlled. It features a severed life sized deadite head, neon green cold cathode lighting, arduino controlled duel strobe lights, 4wd, and Omni wheel steering.

Where earlier levels of Shadows of the Damned reference the style of the Tarantinos and Tobe Hoopers (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), the third chapter features an extended tribute to Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 and their director, Sam Raimi.

While he's better known now for his directing work on the Spider-man films, Raimi made his bones (no pun intended) writing, directing and producing the Evil Dead films. In the middle of Shadows of the Damned's third chapter, the Evil Dead worship isn't just evident, it assaults you. Running screaming through the woods, our hero Garcia (F*cking) Hotspur is fleeing the deranged corpse (possibly? Shadows wallows in nebulous explanations of weird sh*t) of his suicide girlfriend Paula, taking refuge in wooden cabins, screaming to the world "How do you stop them?" I had to stop and take a moment to process the familiarity, the audacious, wholesale lifting of visual cues, right down to the roaring intangible spirit trying to break down the cabin door.

Then an undead monster banged its head up into the cellar door and cackled maniacally, staring at Garcia through the crack left by the rope securing the portal, and I'm pretty sure it said something about swallowing my soul.

As a fan of Raimi's work, it's hard not to feel an overwhelming sense of kinship with Suda 51 for his clear love of Evil Dead ad infinitum.
